35 Irene St, Wynnum.

Upstanding in the sleepy bayside town of Wynnum, Brisbane, this original lowset dwelling is now far from its humble beginnings.

Client Brief:

The aim was simple, to transform this ‘old-tired’ existing 3 bed, 1 bath house into a functional 5 bed, 3 bath family home with usable outdoor areas and off-street undercover parking.

Our Solution:

By extending outward and excavating a simple cut into the prevailing slope, we were able to create a two storey extension capable of accommodating the contemporary needs of a growing family. With a large North facing elevated deck adjoining the main open plan living/kitchen space, the house gave an impression of size and grandness, despite remaining quite humble in floor area.

The overall styling aimed to achieve a blend of a classic Queensland family home, but with a crisp hint of modern hamptons style living. Through this approach, the house responds beautifully to the local area and streetscape, whilst subtly standing out from the crowd and giving the impression of something more contemporary.

Given the narrow lot and the need for a large double carport at the front, emphasis was placed on ensuring that this did not adversely impact the visual experience of the home's facade. Through cohesive use of materials, angles and proportion, the six by six meter carport acts like an extension of the home, rather than a solely practical based add-on.
